That famous phrase is often followed by “master of none”! So, is it a boon or a bane? I would say… it depends! Depends on the trades itself, depends on how you look at it, and more importantly, depends on how good you are at choosing the right trade. How about “Master of (Jack of All Trades)”?
Consider photo editing as an example. There are quite a few tools available. Few basic apps, some integrated into photo viewers, and other professional software that is generally paid. Starting from Microsoft Paint up to Adobe Photoshop, there are quite a lot of these. You’ll probably be surprised to know that even Microsoft PowerPoint comes in handy at times. When you have access to many of these, choosing the right one for each task is a separate skill. If you go down the wrong path, you’ll probably end up spending more time than you anticipated.
A more common scenario is the chores around the house. A knife would not help with shaping your beard and a trimmer would not cut the veggies. So, how do you choose the right one? Well, just like cutting veggies (and trimming your beard), it’s a skill to be learned over time. When you have the chance, try to do the same task with multiple tools and find out what works the best. It is also important to identify what you are more comfortable using, than what others suggest is better.
Choose wisely!
